BARNES AND MORTLAKE
(South West London)

Adjacent villages on the River Thames, both are entered in the Domesday Book. Home to mathematician and astrologer John Dee, advisor to Elizabeth 1st, Mortlake was also the location of the Tapestry Works, founded in James 1st reign in the early 17th century. On Barnes Terrace, Gustave Holst resided between 1903-13, whilst more recently, Tim Rice(lyricist)has moved to be a river side resident. Elsewhere in Barnes, German Dadaist Kurt Schwitters created collages from found everyday objects, before moving to the Lake District.
